Omega Psi Phi Fraternity was founded on November 17, 1911 on the campus of Howard University. Three Howard undergraduate students, with the assistance of their faculty adviser initiated the first men’s Greek letter fraternity on a Black College campus.
The name Omega Psi Phi was derived from the initials of the Greek phrase meaning “friendship is essential to the soul,” The phrase was selected as the motto. Manhood, scholarship, perseverance and uplift were adopted as cardinal principles.
Since it’s founding, Omega’s purpose has been to bring about a union of college men of similar high ideals of scholarship and manhood, to occupy a progressive helpful and constructive place in the political life of the community and to aid the downtrodden in its efforts to achieve higher economic and intellectual status.
There is currently no active chapter of Omega Psi Phi on the University of Washington, Seattle campus.
